Quick answer
A gas pool heater is installed in seven steps: set it on a level pad at least 5 feet from the pool wall with the clearances its manual asks for, run a gas line sized for its BTU input and the length of the run, add a shutoff valve and sediment trap outside the cabinet, plumb it after the filter and ahead of any chlorinator, wire its small 120- or 240-volt control circuit with a bonding wire, keep the vent outlet clear of doors and windows, then pressure-test and check the gas pressure with the heater firing. The gas connection is the part to leave to a licensed plumber or gas fitter, and in most towns it needs a permit. The four big brands give different numbers for the same job. Haywardâs Universal H-Series manual wants 72 inches of open space above the heater under a roof overhang, while Pentair, Jandy and Raypak ask for 3 feet. Angiâs 2026 data puts a gas heater at $1,500â$6,000 installed, and a new gas line accounts for much of the gap between those two figures.
By the numbers (checked November 4, 2026):
- 5 ft: minimum distance from the inside pool wall in the Hayward, Pentair and Jandy manuals, unless a solid barrier separates them.
- 1-1/4 in vs 1-1/2 in: the natural gas pipe a 400,000 BTU heater needs on a 75-foot run. Hayward, Pentair and Raypak allow 1-1/4 inch; Jandyâs table steps up to 1-1/2 inch past 50 feet.
- 3.5â4.5 in. WC: the minimum natural gas inlet pressure, from Raypakâs 3.5 to Haywardâs 4.5 inches of water column, measured with the heater running.
- 30â125 GPM: Haywardâs flow range for the H400, the widest of the four. Raypakâs AVIA 404 accepts 40â100 GPM.
- 1/2 psi: above this test pressure, the heater must be disconnected from the gas line before the line is pressure-tested.
- 1 year parts-only: Pentairâs warranty on a heater that needs professional installation but did not get it, and Haywardâs 2026 Open Line coverage for W3 models sold online.
- $500â$2,000: Angiâs 2026 range for running a new gas line.
What makes a gas install different
A gas heater is the only pool heater type that brings a fuel line, combustion and exhaust to the equipment pad. That adds three jobs a heat pump install or a solar install never has: sizing and pressure-testing the gas pipe, keeping the exhaust away from openings into the house, and checking gas pressure at start-up. The electrical side is the easy part, because the heater only runs a blower and controls. The generic steps for every heater type are in our pool heater installation guide. This guide covers what is specific to gas and propane.
| Job | Who usually does it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pad, setting, anchoring | Owner or pool pro | No code license needed in most places; anchoring is required in Florida (Jandy) and hurricane areas |
| Water plumbing (2-inch PVC) | Owner or pool pro | Same work as any pool equipment; flow and chlorinator order matter |
| Gas line from meter or tank | Licensed plumber or gas fitter | Sized to BTU input and run length, permit and inspection in most towns |
| Gas connection, pressure test, leak test | Licensed plumber or gas fitter | A wrong test can damage the gas valve; leaks are a fire and CO risk |
| Electrical and bonding | Licensed electrician | Small 120V or 240V circuit, disconnect and an 8 AWG bond wire |
| Start-up and gas pressure check | Installer with two manometers | Inlet and manifold pressure must be read with the heater firing |
Step 1: Pick the spot (clearances by brand)
All four manuals agree on the basics. The heater goes outdoors on a level surface, where rain runoff, sprinklers and growing shrubs canât reach the burner or the controls. Hayward, Pentair and Jandy all say never to install it under a deck, and all three put it at least 5 feet from the inside wall of the pool unless a solid barrier is in between. The numbers that differ are the side clearances, the space under a roof overhang, and how far the heater must sit from an air conditioner or heat pump.
| Requirement | Hayward Universal H-Series | Pentair MasterTemp | Jandy JXi | Raypak AVIA 264/404 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clearance to combustibles (outdoor) | Top open, front 18", back 6" (12" with vinyl siding), water side 12", other side 6" | 6" from building wall at the vent; 6" top and sides indoors | 6" on all sides; 18" service room at one door panel, 4 ft to remove the header panel | Top open, front and back 0", water side 3", vent side 6"; 24" recommended for service |
| Under a roof overhang | 72" from top of heater, open on 3 sides | 3 ft from overhang to top of vent, open on 3 sides | 3 ft from overhang to top of vent, open on 3 sides | 3 ft from top of heater, open on 3 sides |
| Distance from A/C or heat pump | 24" | 36" | No set distance; warns against venting near A/C or air supply fans | 3 ft |
| Vent outlet vs doors and windows | Per NFPA 54 and the manual's clearance figure | 4 ft below or 4 ft horizontally | 4 ft horizontally, 4 ft below or 1 ft above | 4 ft horizontally |
| Vent outlet vs forced-air inlet | Per NFPA 54 | 3 ft above any inlet within 10 ft | 3 ft above any inlet within 10 ft | 3 ft above any inlet within 10 ft |

The overhang rule is the one that most often moves a heater. A pad tucked under a 6-foot eave can pass for a Pentair, Jandy or Raypak unit and still fail Haywardâs 72-inch rule. Haywardâs 24-inch HVAC distance is also the shortest of the four, so a heater that fits between an existing condenser and a fence with a Hayward may need a foot more room with a Pentair. Your townâs property-line and noise setbacks come on top of these numbers. They are covered in our pool heater setback guide.
Step 2: The pad and anchoring
The heater needs a level, solid base that drains rain and condensation away. Haywardâs manual accepts concrete or a fabricated slab, including Ultralite-type concrete-over-foam HVAC pads, and recommends putting the heater level with or slightly above the filter pad. All four brands allow installation on combustible flooring, and Hayward adds that the flooring must not reduce the heaterâs bottom clearance. Anchoring depends on where you live. Hayward ships tie-down brackets for areas where local code requires them, Pentair sells a bolt-down bracket kit (P/N 460738) for hurricane and high-wind areas, and Jandyâs manual says JXi heaters in Florida must be fastened to the pad. Pad sizes and materials are in our pool heater pad guide.
Step 3: Size and run the gas line
The gas line is where most installs go wrong, and it is the job a licensed fitter should own. Size it off the heaterâs input rating and the equivalent length of the run from the meter or propane regulator. Pentair and Jandy both say to add 3 feet of straight pipe for every elbow. Here is what each manufacturerâs own table asks for on a 400,000 BTU natural gas heater:
| Natural gas run (equivalent length) | Hayward H400FDN | Pentair MasterTemp 400 | Jandy JXi 400 | Raypak AVIA 404 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 20 ft | 1-1/4" | 1" | 1-1/4" | 1" |
| Up to 50 ft | 1-1/4" | 1-1/4" | 1-1/4" | 1-1/4" |
| 50â95 ft | 1-1/4" | 1-1/4" | 1-1/2" | 1-1/4" |
| 95â100 ft | 1-1/4" | 1-1/4" | 1-1/2" | 1-1/2" |
| 100â200 ft | 1-1/2" | 1-1/2" | 1-1/2" | 1-1/2" (to 215 ft) |
Haywardâs table assumes 0.5 psi or less inlet pressure and a 0.5-inch WC pressure drop; Jandyâs and Raypakâs assume a 0.5-inch WC drop. Raypak allows 3/4-inch pipe only for the last 5 feet to the gas valve.
The elbows can change the answer. A 90-foot run with four elbows counts as 102 feet, which puts it in the 1-1/2 inch row on all four brands. If the meter also feeds a furnace, water heater or range, the line and the meter both have to carry the combined load. Haywardâs manual gives the example of a 225 meter, which supplies 225,000 BTU per hour. That is too small for a 400,000 BTU pool heater on its own. The full BTU-by-distance chart is in our gas line size guide.
The gas pressure at the heater has to land in a window, measured while the heater is firing:
| Inlet gas pressure (in. WC) | Hayward | Pentair | Jandy | Raypak AVIA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Natural gas, minimum | 4.5 | 4 | 4 | 3.5 |
| Natural gas, maximum | 10.5 | 14 | 10.5 | 10.5 |
| Propane, minimum | 10.0 | 4 | 4 | 8.0 (running) |
| Propane, maximum | 13.0 | 14 | 14 | 13 (static) |
| Flexible gas connector | Allowed if CSA-approved for outdoor use and rated at or above the heater's BTU input | Not recommended unless sized to the supplier's rating | Do not use | Not specified in the manual |
The fittings at the heater follow the same pattern on every brand: a manual shutoff valve outside the cabinet (Hayward says within 6 feet of the heater), a sediment trap or drip leg ahead of the gas valve, and a union outside the cabinet so the gas train can come out for service. Pentairâs guide warns in capital letters that putting the gas union inside the heater cabinet voids the warranty. Reduce the pipe to the valve size (3/4 or 1 inch NPT on the Hayward and 3/4 inch on the Jandy) as close to the heater as possible. Use a gas-rated pipe compound on the male threads only. Raypak says not to use Teflon tape on its gas threads.
Propane adds tank and regulator work. Haywardâs manual requires the tank outdoors per NFPA 58, regulators sized for the heaterâs full BTU input, and its two-stage tables followed âwithout exceptionâ on two-stage systems. It lists an LP tank below 30% full among the causes of a heater that wonât run right. Pentair and Jandy both warn against installing a propane heater in a pit or low spot, because propane is heavier than air and collects there. Tank sizing is covered in our pool heater propane tank guide.
Step 4: Plumbing
Water flows from the pump to the filter, then the heater, then any chlorinator or chemical feeder, then back to the pool. Hayward and Pentair both want a corrosion-resistant check valve between the heater outlet and the chlorinator, so concentrated sanitizer canât siphon back into the heat exchanger when the pump stops. Hayward adds that the chlorinator should sit lower than the heater. Pentair notes that a heater plumbed backwards will cycle on and off continuously.
| 400,000 BTU model | Minimum flow | Maximum flow | Water connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hayward H400FDN | 30 GPM | 125 GPM (internal bypass) | Fittings for 2" or 2-1/2" pipe |
| Pentair MasterTemp 400 | 40 GPM | 120 GPM | 2" PVC with integral unions |
| Jandy JXi 400 | 30 GPM | 120 GPM | 2" PVC |
| Raypak AVIA 404 | 40 GPM | 100 GPM | 2" Schedule 40 |
Above the maximum, each manual calls for a manual bypass valve set with a flow meter and then locked or left without its handle. Raypakâs 100 GPM ceiling is the lowest of the four, so a large variable-speed pump running at full speed is more likely to need an external bypass on an AVIA. Bypass valve options are covered in our pool heater bypass valve guide.
The heaterâs height relative to the water also matters, because its pressure switch reads back-pressure to confirm flow. Hayward says a heater less than 3 feet above the water surface needs eyeball or directional fittings on the return lines, and one more than 3 feet above needs a loop in the piping so it doesnât drain during a filter change. Jandy says the pressure switch must be readjusted if the heater sits below the water level or more than 2 feet above it.
Step 5: Electrical and bonding
A gas pool heaterâs electrical load is small, because the gas does the heating. Haywardâs Universal H-Series draws a maximum of 5.5 amps on 120 or 240 volts, ships wired for 240 volts, and recommends a 15-amp circuit. Raypakâs AVIA draws about 1.6 amps on 120 volts or 1.2 amps on 240 volts. Jandyâs JXi ships set for 240 volts and switches to 120 volts by rotating a selector board. Hayward requires a disconnect switch within sight of the heater. The heater also needs an 8 AWG solid copper bonding wire from its bonding lug to the poolâs bonding grid, as Haywardâs manual and the National Electrical Code require. Breaker and wire sizing for every heater type is in our pool heater electrical requirements guide.
Step 6: Venting
Outdoors, none of these heaters needs a flue. Each ships with a factory vent top for outdoor installation, and Haywardâs manual says outright that it needs no additional vent piping outdoors. The vent outlet still has to clear the openings listed in Step 1. Jandy also warns that air conditioner and air supply fans can pull exhaust back into the house. Indoor and enclosed installs are a different job. They need the brandâs indoor vent kit, Category I or III vent pipe, and combustion air openings sized for every gas appliance in the room. In June 2019 the CPSC announced Haywardâs recall of pool heater vent kits over a carbon monoxide hazard, so check any older indoor kit against our pool heater recall guide. Brand-by-brand vent rules are in our pool heater venting guide.
Step 7: Pressure test, gas check and start-up
Pressure-test the new gas line before the heater goes into service, but protect the heaterâs gas valve while you do it. All four manuals use the same rule: close the heaterâs own shutoff valve for any test at or below 1/2 psi, and disconnect the heater from the line for any test above 1/2 psi. Raypakâs AVIA manual adds that over-pressurized gas valves are not covered by warranty. After reconnecting, leak-test every joint with soapy water, never a flame. Jandy notes that some leak-test solutions can corrode fittings, so rinse them afterwards.
At start-up, the installer connects manometers to the gas valveâs inlet and manifold pressure taps and reads both while the heater is firing. If other gas appliances share the line, they should be running too, as Haywardâs procedure asks. Pentair and Jandy say any reading taken with the heater off will lead to performance problems. Haywardâs heaters are set up for altitudes up to 2,000 feet as shipped, and higher installs need the manualâs high-altitude adjustments.
DIY or pro: what each manual and warranty requires
| Brand | Bought through a pool pro and professionally installed | Bought online or installed yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Hayward | Expert Line, in-ground: 3 years parts, 1 year field labor (2026 terms) | W3 Open Line SKUs (such as W3H400FDN), approved for online sale: 1 year parts only under the 2026 Open Line terms dated May 11, 2026 |
| Pentair | At least 1 year parts and labor; 3 years when a pump, filter and heater go on one invoice and one installation | "One-year parts-only" for internet purchases, and for products that require professional installation but did not get it. Pentair lists heaters as requiring it |
| Jandy | Limited factory warranty through a Zodiac dealer | The manual requires a contractor licensed in pool equipment where the state or town requires one, or an experienced pool professional otherwise; improper installation voids the warranty |
| Raypak | The limited warranty covers heaters installed "by a properly licensed service provider" and per Raypak's instructions | A self-installed heater falls outside that wording; over-pressurized gas valves are also excluded |

Pentair defines professional installation as work by someone who charges a fee and holds a business or contractorâs license, such as a pool professional, plumber, electrician or HVAC specialist. Its online âECâ models, like the MasterTemp EC-462028, sit in the parts-only e-commerce category. Haywardâs Open Line terms have changed too. The 2023 version gave in-ground W3 products three years of parts coverage, and the 2025 and 2026 versions give one year. Our pool heater warranty guide compares all five major brands.
What it costs in 2026
Angiâs pool heater cost guide, updated March 17, 2026, puts a gas or propane heater at $1,500â$6,000 installed. That breaks down as $1,000â$4,500 for the heater and $500â$1,500 for labor. Angi lists $500â$2,000 for a new gas line, $100â$500 for permits, $25â$50 to haul away the old heater, and $45â$200 an hour for a plumber. A like-for-like swap on an existing, correctly sized gas line sits near the bottom of that range. A first install with a long run from the meter sits near the top. Our installation cost guide breaks those numbers down for every heater type.

Gas heaters by how easy they are to install
None of these differences make one heater better than another at heating a pool. They decide which one fits your pad, your gas line and your pump without extra parts.
Jandy JXi 400 (JXi400N)
- Only 6" to combustibles on every side, plus 18" of service room at one door panel.
- Strictest gas line rules: 1-1/2" pipe beyond 50 feet, and no flexible gas piping at all.
- Must be anchored to the pad in Florida. Model details are in our Jandy JXi review.
Pentair MasterTemp 400
- Accepts 4â14" WC on both natural gas and propane, the widest range of the four.
- Needs 36" from an air conditioner or heat pump, the largest HVAC gap in this guide.
- Gas union inside the cabinet voids the warranty. Lineup and prices are in our MasterTemp guide.
Raypak AVIA 404 (PR404AE)
- Runs on natural gas down to 3.5" WC, useful at the end of a long or shared line.
- Zero front and back clearance to combustibles outdoors, but Raypak recommends 24" at the sides and top for service.
- The 100 GPM ceiling makes an external bypass more likely with a big pump. See our Raypak guide.
Hayward Universal H-Series H400FDN / W3H400FDN
- The only manual of the four that explicitly approves a rated flexible gas connector, and the shortest HVAC gap (24").
- Largest clearances: 18" in front, 12" on the water side and 72" under an overhang; natural gas minimum 4.5" WC.
- W3 online models get 1 year parts only under Hayward's 2026 terms. See our Hayward guide.
Recall check: the only active gas pool heater recall in the CPSC database on November 4, 2026, was Haywardâs September 2026 recall of about 4,600 HDFS400 Universal-HC dual-fuel heaters (recall 26-777). It does not cover the H400FDN or W3H400FDN in this guide. Pentairâs 2021 MasterTemp recall covered only units made between December 22, 2020, and January 6, 2021. Details are in our pool heater recall guide. For picks by pool size and budget, see our best gas pool heater roundup.
The bottom line
Installing a gas pool heater is a pad, plumbing and electrical job that any pool pro can handle, plus a gas job that belongs to a licensed fitter. Put the heater at least 5 feet from the pool wall with the clearances your brand asks for, especially under an overhang and next to an air conditioner. Size the gas pipe from your brandâs own table using the equivalent length with elbows, and check the inlet pressure with the heater running. Plumb it after the filter with a check valve ahead of the chlorinator, and disconnect it before anyone pressure-tests the gas line. Before you buy online to save money, read the warranty. In 2026, a Hayward W3 heater bought online and a Pentair heater installed without a professional both get one year of parts-only coverage.
